UNISON come to school

The Unison Visit

Written by Makayla

Unison do the impossible.  They own all the power lines, all the power boxes and transformers. Transformers are huge power boxes that you see in town.
Safety?  First, they wear a hard hat, fire resistant overalls, tested special rubber boots, a face shield, gloves, merino under-shirts and protective coats - high viz.
We learned a lot!
Conductors are things that electricity can travel through easily, like water, trees, humans and metal. Some things electricity cannot travel through easily are special rubber, plastic and porcelain.  They are called insulators.
Electricity travels around the world seven times in one second.  When electricity strikes a person it will stop the heart pumping, muscles will seize, it burns the inside and outside of the body and it is hard to breathe.  Electricity is always trying to get to the ground.  Electricity is carried through high voltage power lines around the country to sub-stations, then power is spread to other areas.
Many people have been struck by power lines.  It is so important to stay away from broken lines or power boxes, keep others away and to call 08002UNISON!

Year 3 Tent Day

Tent Day Recount written by Olivia
On the 29th of October the Year 3’s had a ‘camp at school’ day.  It was fun having a tent city.  The part I liked best was playing ‘elastics’ with Amber and Lillie.  After we had our shared lunch of pop-corn, scrumptious fluffy meringue, adorable pikelets spread with butter and topped off with 100’s and 1000’s, we had a try at hosting.  The junior classes arrived at Tent City.  After lunch we split up into activity groups.  My team was Number 1.  In my group were Rose, Lillie, Annie, Sam and I.  We had to find a spider, an insect and something that smelt nice.  Mrs Campbell chose me to be the leader of our group.  At 2.00pm we had to take the tents down.  That was one of the best parts of the day for me because we got to hang out.

Tent Day Recount written by Luke

Ding!  Tent Day was beginning.  We did the roll.  We were going to set up the tents.  Just before morning tea we got ice-blocks.  At playtime me, Stanley, Alex, Henry, Fred and Jack B. played Zombies.  At lunchtime it was great!  We had cake, muffins and bacon and egg pie.  I got to welcome the Year 1 and 2’s.  Our tent was a hit.  We called it Party House.  We had about 20 kids.  It was awesome.  Thank you to all the parents who supplied food and tents.

'A Day in Miss Blood's Class' - Written by Ruby

Miss Blood locked the classroom door and hurried to her desk.  She plummeted her false vampire teeth on her desk of doom.

Brennan had told me that when he was in Miss Blood's class a girl called Blenda stayed at school and was never seen again.  He also said there were blood stains all over the wooden floor, underneath the scabby old cabinet and under the stairs leading to ... well, no-one knows except the teacher!

Miss Blood looked like someone who would smoke 22,000 cigarettes a day.  Her false teeth are ten times bigger than her mouth and shaped like vampire teeth.

At lunch I went to play with my new friend Claudia.  We mapped and planned our escape root. Claudia said, "We'll get caught by Miss Blood and never seen again!"

A terrible strike came before a loud rumble that shook the ground and we soon silently slipped back to our desks ... but no sign of Miss Blood?  Without thinking I sprinted as fast as I could to the creepy cabinet under the large stairs.  I had no idea Miss Blood was in her office up the stairs.  Everyone fell into a sudden silence as Miss Blood tip-toed down the stairs.  She crept very close to the door where I was hiding, I could see her through the key-hole.  She tip-toed to another cupboard and brought out her purse.  She yelled, "we will do the roll now to make sure everyone is here."

My heart pounded as she pulled out a chihuahua.  The class went, "Ohh," like the chihuahua was cute.

"NO!  NO!  NO!  Not 'Ohh' ... Scary, dangerous Arrh!"  Miss Blood hissed.

She did the roll and trying to be nice she left me til last ... "Kate?  Kate!  Alright, out you come Shivers."

She pulled out the chihuahua and pinched him.  Suddenly he turned into a werewolf, well not quite a werewolf, but a scary looking wolf.  She tied a lead around Shivers neck.  Shivers was called Shivers because he gave everyone the shivers all down their backs.  He ran everywhere, until he came to my cupboard.  Miss Blood opened the door and seized me by the arm.  She pulled me to her false teeth.  She was blabbering on about something, I had no idea what she was saying because she'd taken out her false teeth ... and that's why I went home with nine fingers.

Character Description - 'My Big Buddy'.

Writing Task: To show understanding of some of the features involved in describing a character.

* Use vivid description to create a clear picture of your Big Buddy in the mind of the reader.
Include details about appearance, personality, mannerisms, likes, dislikes and talents.

My Big Buddy Lauryn – Written by Ruby
Biking, one of the joys of life and my big buddy Lauryn Wood likes to ride bikes.  She also enjoys baking sweet cupcakes and reading big fiction books.
White chocolate … she hates!  That’s very surprising I know, but she still has a very sweet tooth.  Lauryn dislikes swimming.  I can sort of relate to that one!
“Score!”  The crowd shouts.  Lauryn scored a goal in netball.  She can dash, dodge, defend, catch and score goals.  How cool is that?!
Banana brown hair!  Never heard of that before!  But it definitely suits her.  Her banana brown hair has its own special curve right behind the ears.  She experiments with different hair styles which look great on her every time.  I look at her and see her shimmering blue sea eyes looking back at me.  Spots and dots all over her face – big, small and medium sized freckles which truly bring out her beauty.
Everyone has to be some height.  I think average is best and of course Lauryn is of average height.  A positive attitude she has.  Most people have one, like most buddies.  Lauryn has a very kind and generous heart.  All people should try to be caring.  She is very bold and smart at reading because she Is very focussed.  She listens to the teacher and for writing she tries to put more descriptive language in it.  If she is reading books she likes to doggy flap the pages.  Doggy flap means she folds the top corner of a book.  She sometimes gets in trouble but not all the time.  She loves to fiddle with anything she can find.
I love Buddy Time, even if it takes up our Discovery time.

My Big Buddy Morgan – Written by Molly
My dark-chocolate haired, brown eyed, reckless buddy Morgan likes junk food, art and sports.  She is bubbly, rough like a gorilla, weird (in a good way).  Her dislikes are her sisters and the most annoying thing ever for her is the unfair play, like in netball when the ref says something you didn’t do to make the other team win.  Her fizzing talents are eating chocolate, designing clothes and sports.  Morgan’s mannerisms or habits are sucking her gooey thumb, tapping her very short bitten fingernails and picking at them.  I don’t know what I would do without her.

My Big Buddy Josh – Written by Riley
My buddy’s name is Josh.  He likes rugby, Minecraft and Halo.  He doesn’t like homework or speaking in public.  He likes to keep his blond hair short and he is not tall for his age and he is a skinny boy.  Broccoli is one food he doesn’t like.  He is an expert at tennis and sport.  Josh is an awesome, bubbly, crazy kind of guy and he has a caring sense of humour.  His weird habits include twisting his hair and eating.  I like my buddy Josh.

My Big Buddy Jordan – Written by Zac
Who do you think is a good kicker?  I think Jordan is.  He likes motorbikes and hockey.  His talents are playing hockey and kicking a soccer ball high up into the air.  He has a habit of flicking his hair.  His dislikes are running cross country and the swimming sports.  He would rather hunt or ride his motorbike.  Jordan is handsome and nice.  His personality is awesome and funny.  I like it that Jordan is my buddy.

My Big Buddy Ruby – Written by Abby
My buddy Ruby is one of a kind.  Ruby has lovely, long, dirty-blond hair and milk chocolate eyes.  Nice hot waffles are Ruby's favourite. She also loves fluffy unicorns and awesome horses.  Ruby is very bubbly.  Everyone knows Ruby's outgoing and CRAZY!  Netball is one of Ruby's talents.  So is acting and horse riding.  I haven't seen her on her horse but I believe she's great.  Ruby absolutely hates scary things.  I know this because she screamed at the taniwha at a school performance.  But what Ruby really can't stand are her annoying brothers and gross mushrooms.  She can't get out of her habit of tapping and rolling her eyes.  Ruby also thinks she's chubby but I don't think so.  She makes reading a joy.

My Big Buddy Ryan – Written by Sam
My buddy is amazingly cool.  He likes tasting food.  He is a very fast runner.  I think he is fantastic.  His main talents are motor biking and running.  I normally see him running around the school grounds.  He likes football and I sometimes see him playing.  I think he is very interesting.  He says he is a very good smeller of things.  Ryan hates ducks and fish.  I wish I was as good as him at everything.

My Big Buddy Alex – Written by Zaymia
My big buddy Alex likes netball and dancing.  She hates smelly boys and creepy crawly sp...sp...spiders!!  Slithery slimy snakes are awful to her too.  Alex's main habits are biting her lip and putting her hair behind her ears.  My buddy Alex has talents at gym and she is a powerful netballer.  I wish I was that good.  She is kind and caring and very bubbly all the time.  She has a fab fashion sense and a nice smile to top it all off.  Alex has silky, glossy hair.  Alex is hysterical.  She always makes me bust out with laughter.  She is positive, never negative, always smiles.  She is a lovely buddy.  I would not want any other.

My Big Buddy Emma – Written by Annie
My buddy Emma is an athletic person.  She likes animals and hockey.  Emma doesn't like to be chucked around by a pony or falling off a pony.  Her mannerism is biting her tongue.  She has blue eyes and brown hair.  Emma is  a kind buddy.

My Big Buddy Jonty M. – Written by Jack B.

My Big Buddy Jonty  – Written by Timmy
Jonty is a funny, bubbly guy.  His glasses shine in the sun.  He has light blue eyes that sparkle and cool light brown hair.  Jonty can't stop hair flicking or clicking his fingers.  He is smashing at scootering and gaming and he likes them too.  Jonty despises his brother and vomits out vegetables.  He is a bold, strong buddy.  At least I have a buddy like him.

My Big Buddy Lars – Written by Angus
My buddy Lars is so funny.  He tells heaps of jokes.  His favourite thing is swimming.  He hates nuts.  He is actually allergic to nuts and gets very sick if he eats them.  Lars is bubbly, kind and he has brown milky skin.  I'm lucky to have Lars as my buddy.

My Big Buddy Jess – Written by Mariah
Jess is the best.  She is my buddy.
Jess is very bubbly, she's caring and fun.  She is a confident person.
My buddy is a genius.  She just won a prize at the H.B. Science Fair.  She refuses to eat mushrooms or brussel sprouts.
She loves to walk fast. She is a friendly leader, out-going and quirky.  Jess thinks out of the box.  She is the best buddy ever.
Jess has hazel eyes.  You should see her thick, blond hair.  She has a habit of biting her fingernails, she loves to move a lot and is a chatter-box.

Olivia dislikes netball and walnuts.  She is a lovely person to be with and her BFF is Sophie.   She is very talented at hockey and playing the guitar.   Olivia is a great buddy to have.

My Big Buddy Katherine – Written by Sophie
My biggest buddy ever is Katherine Ebbett.  She loves fluffy animals, the scrumdiddlydumscious Subway, designing and crafting in scrap-booking and of course her wonderful friends.  Katherine dislikes juicy tomatoes, dry spinach and sprinting!!!..My buddy's personality is friendly, very gentle, sunshine happy, kind, arty and creative.  Her talents would have to be in netball, she has a bird's singing voice and is awesome at playing the guitar.  When you see her appear you see a short, light brown freckled girl face with golden brown hair.  Her eyes change colour and are both very different.  She has mannerisms and they are playing with her ear, an annoying humming sound she makes and she is very fiddly.  My buddy is so awesome!

My Big Buddy Lauryn – Written by Amber
My buddy Lauryn is a caring person with a positive attitude and is smart thinking when it is learning time.  She white chocolate and swimming lengths but I don't know why.  Her talents are at netball and sprinting, example, cross country.  I call Lauryn 'Lolalolliepop' as a nickname because she is a sweet person.  Reading fiction books are her favourite books to read.  Cooking sweet treats - muffins, cupcakes and cakes, biking by the sea are her likes.  Lauryn is average in height and has lots of freckles on her face.  Her hair is two different colours - brown at the top and golden at the bottom.  She has blue sparkly eyes that shine in the sun. My Big Buddy Brooke – Written by Makayla
My crazy buddy is Brooke.  When she sees boys she freaks and runs like a maniac.  She is artistic, helpful, caring and inspiring.  She listens to me which is not normal for me to get much attention.  Brooke adores sports, rainbow unicorns and gum.  Brothers are a nightmare to Brooke, so are BORING JOBS!!!  Our ideas are very similar.  I am so fortunate to have Brooke as a big buddy.

My Big Buddy Sophie – Written by Olivia
My blond-haired, blue-eyed, tall, slim buddy Sophie adores pie, meatballs, chicken, swimming and believe it or not can play the guitar.  I like her because she is loving, a great friend, laid back and she is fabulous at being a leader.  She's great at netball and is a magnificent swimmer.  One of her mannerisms is slouching and another is biting her nails.  I think Sophie is very amusing because she jokes around a lot.  My buddy doesn't like playing rugby or eating brussel sprouts.  Sophie is definitely one of a kind, athletic, brainy, loyal buddy and she's mine.

My Big Buddy Jacob – Written by Stanley
Who do you think is the most amazing buddy?  I think it's Jacob.  His glimmering eyes sparkle in the sun.  Wow!  He is good at horse riding, motocross and football.  I wish I was as good as him.  When I look at him he looks swag and cool.  Once he told me that he likes riding motorbikes and he always gets a wedgy when horse riding and he's rather not go up a hill on one.  That's how I would describe my big buddy.

My weird, crazy buddy Tarras hates hairy spiders that try to suck her blood.  Smelly boys make her dry reach.  She hates lots of whistling and screaming.  Her talents are horse riding - she can ride bare back, eating lots and baking.  Some of her mannerisms are biting her nails when she is bored, playing with her hair when she does not want to listen and chewing her tongue when she is doing something.  She is really out-going and bubbly!  She is a food monster and a horse lover.  Her appearance is of someone with blond hair - like yellow, she blue eyes that are really blue, a stocky build, which means she isn't fat or skinny, and tanned skin.  That's what I think about my buddy.

My crazy, bubbly, giggly buddy Angel is so awesome.  She loves to run but likes to play netball the most.  Baking is a favourite thing to do.  She appears in the same clothes, same shoes and same style everyday.  She has this habit of biting her bottom lip.  It looks funny.  Angel hates annoying sounds, like polystyrene when it rubs together.  She is such a cool buddy to have.

My Big Buddy Angus – Written by Luke
Angus likes motorbiking.  His natural talent is mountain biking.  He never shouts, he is a great hockey player and is very vivacious.  His eye colour changes, he has silky brown hair.  He leaps out of his seat when the words "4x4' are mentioned - he loves them.  One of his amazing talents is hockey.  He is so fun my head could explode,  His heart could freeze when he falls off his motorbike.  He can't help crossing his fingers.
I feel really happy he is my buddy because we like most of the same things.
